Let's look at slavery in New England.  Why is this history being revealed now?  Who kept it a secret?  Why?

  1. For so long, we have been taught that slavery was only in the south, and if slaves wanted to be free, then they should escape to the north. I am learning now, the Northern states also held slaves. It was the same treatment, but it was not as long. The North has been getting off for so long like they are the innocent ones, when in reality, the New England area was The spot to come to for slaves.

  2. Speaking off what Kiambu said, the North was able to do a better job hiding the fact that they had slaves because they were usually working in construction or in factories. It was very hard to be considered "free" even if you were in the North. Slaves were treated just as badly in the North, there just weren't as many slaves here and also slavery didn't last as long as it did in the South.

  3. I think the whole North vs South debate can be thrown into the discussion from the Civil War era. It is a classic case of 'history is written by the victor', the North won the Civil War so they got to write their own reputation and story of how America was during that time. They could write that they were more innocent, a free man's land, and that they didn't have slaves as opposed to the South. The North's slave history has been hidden, not nonexistent.

  4. I 100% agree with what ray said. The North did write the book when it comes to slaves because of how the war ended. Looking at the presentations in class today, we were all able to see that the North is not innocent. All of the country had slaves not just the South but when we think of slaves we will immediately have the picture of the Southern states pop into our heads because that's just how we grew up. He couldn't have said it any better, "The North's slave history has been hidden, not nonexistent."

  5. Similar to a lot of people thinking that slavery was mainly in the south, I think that most peoples idea of slavery was that all the slaves were working under the hot sun on plantations. We now know that this hold no truth, we learned that the jobs slaves had differed in many situations. Some slaves worked in the house as a cook, or maybe the worked as a person who sewed all the clothes. The idea that slaves only worked on plantations has been proven false.

  6. I agree with what was said that growing up you where always thought that slaves go north to be free. Learning now that Rhode Island was one of the states who benefited the most from slavery and the slave trade. Maybe not using the slaves but still one of the biggest imports where in the north. Just interesting that this wasn't thought as a kid really just made the north look so innocent

  7. I have learned that slavery was not just in the south. Being born in New york and living in this area my entire life we kind of seperated ourselves from this horrible past it is our "american halocaust" but northerners always tried to point he finger at southerners and put the blame on them so its extrmley upsetting to learn that the north had a large role in slavery we didnt just allow it to happen we participated.

  8. New England wanted to look like they did not take part in slavery. Even though, New England actually had two of the largest slave ports in Newport and Mystic. Even the Brown family admitted to owning slaves and taking part in the Slave Trade. The people in New England wanted to make it look like they did not take part in it because they realized how evil it was before the south did.

  9. the history of new England slavery is being revealed now because there is a notion that the north did not associate with slaves and had nothing to do with the importation of slaves because, most of the population in the north did not agree with slavey. I don't think that there is one group of people that kept the secret, but if i have to pick one group of people it has to be the textbooks. everything that we learn in school comes from textbook if they are inaccurate they put a wrong image in pour head.

  10. New England kept the fact that they used slavery a secret. They were able to cover their history because of the outcome of the civil war and because of the fact they began to become free states before the other regions. It took so long to reveal this history because New England wanted to be seen as the region that ended it all, when really they were offenders just like the south.

  11. It has always always been a common misconception that slavery was always I'm the south. When one thinks of slavery, what most of the time comes to mind is harsh hot working conditions, not a cold, wet region. The north did everything they could to hide the fact that they contributed a big part in slavery, seeing as to how the two biggest ports in mystic and Newport. It's funny to me how New England trying to cover up something like slavery when eventually, the truth would come out.
