I'm Mrs. Monahan, I have wanted to teach African American History since I started teaching so this is a dream come true. I concentrated in African American Studies in college and I am eager to work on this important and relevant topic together.
This is the one and only Kiambu Fentress here. I took this same course last year, and I really enjoyed it. I want to be really educated on my history, so that is why I am taking this again. I hope to gain a lot of new information this semester.
This is Seyoum Settepani AKA Bommie AKA Say-boom. I want to learn in this class more about the slaves that built this country. I decided to take this corse because i think that People in out day and age still don't treat African Americans like the people.
I want to learn about the expansion of African American culture during the 1920s. I took this course because like you said, African American history is relevant but also left out.
I’m Ellie, I want to study African American History to get a more full view of American History. I also want to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King Jr.
Matt Rosen. I want to learn more about what African Americans did to overcome their daily struggles, and learning about the past can help prevent reoccurring issues in the future.
I took this class so i can become a more well rounded person. The enslavement of African is a big and very sad part in our history as a country i am excited to learn more about this topic in this class.
I really enjoyed learning about the slave ships in class the other day I thought it was extremely interesting that they would pile all of the slaves pretty much on top of each other. Also the fact they had almost no room to move and most couldn't even sit up was just shocking.
Gotta agree with Corey that section on the middle passage was OD. Can't imagine what Africans were thinking while being kidnapped during the skate trade
The fact that no one really knows how the slaves were positioned on the boat was very interesting. Some people say they were laying down side by side. Others say that sat upright with only 3 inches above them for room. Who really knows?
the thoughts that must have been going through there mind during the middle passage. The fact that people took there lives knowing that this was going to be the start to a horrible journey. Very sad
Going off Kiambu's thoughts about the way the slaves were positioned on the ship, I wonder why the conditions were so bad. Taking such a long journey from Africa to America I would think they would want to boost up the conditions and not lose as many lives on the ride there. Maybe their money was tight and could not afford it finically.
Hollywood, I believe gives us just enough of a picture that we need but could give more in an R rated movie to describe the events that have happened in our history. But all together I think that they do a good job of putting the main picture in our heads of events in our past.
Yea i agree with matt on this. They do their best portray the actual events, but at the same time, they still need to make the film a "have to see" film. Therefore, the movie might leave out some vital things that occurred
Zach Holmes. First time blogger but I value hollywoods films I undestand that they need to sell a product and can educate I enjoy both sides of that I am entertained and can understand more about the topic
I think that the hollywood film portray a good example of the truth. Like we saw firsthand in the 12 Years a slave, the movie did a lesser job of showing what really happened in good detail. The movie missed out on a few elements. Overall though I think that the films express an overall picture to the audiance which is the whole point.

ReplyDeleteI think the perspective from the Africans that the Europeans were cannibals was interesting.

ReplyDeleteHollywood does the best that they can. They need to make money so i think its hard to stay true but also making it able for people to watch.
