Why African slavery?  Why did Europeans in the Americas turn to Africa for labor?

  2. The first African Slaves were brought to America in 1611, and promptly sold off to the highest bidder. They were treated like crap and they got unfair working conditions. Africa never grew much so this is why they turned it over to Africa because they wanted it to grow. Also why African slavery because slavery was practiced throughout the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 solidified the central importance of slavery to the South's economy.

  3. The practice of slavery included Indentured servants, Native Americans, and Africans. Native Americans often became ill and many of them died, so they were proven not to be a reliable resource for free labor. Indentured servants were only used for a specific amount of time. Europeans had a labor shortage so they enslaved Africans to help build settlements in the Americas.

  4. Good - let me pose this question...why were conditions on the Middle Passage so difficult? Is this part of racism?
